Music Workshops and Creative Leadership
Tim has been directing music workshops and creative educational projects since 1987. During this time he has led workshops on behalf of many orchestras, arts centres, education authorities and music services, in addition to work for local authorities, charities and hospitals and projects funded by Youth Music, Creative Partnerships, NESTA and the British Council. Projects have have been aimed at many sectors of society including children both in and out of school, young people in youth clubs, colleges, music centres and festivals, community groups of many ethinc and social types, people in homeless centres, prisons, PRUs, hopsitals and drop-in centres. Such projects have varied from small scale improvisation and performance sessions, to large scale multi-faceted projects involving many different groups.
Recent projects have included:
Boyl Again:
a three week project working with 13 primary schools in the hills surrounding Bergen in Norway and musicians from Bergen’s BIT20 contemporary music ensemble. The project culmination was the performance of a new work involving all 370 participants in Bergen’s Greig hall. The performance was inspired by the music of Norwegian composer, Rolf Wallins.
Fanfare to Cloudgate: a project involving 25 beginner brass players, 25 college brass players, and brass players from the BBC Symphony Orchestra. The focus was the development of a fanfare to introduce a new BBC commision by English composer, Param Vir inspired by the Sculpture Cloudgate by Anish Kapoor. The final performance involved the performers playing from 5 positions around the hall. It was broadcast on radio 3.
Barroque and Roll: a one off 2 hour family workshop in Porto based on the music of Bach and Elvis. Participants ranged in age from 3 to 74, and in experience from beginner to expert.
Work for Dohl and Orchestra: a collaborative composition project drawing together musicians from the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Newham Academy and the Dohl Academy. The work focused on finding a creative meeting point between the radically different musical cultures and practices. The final performance took place to an audience of 12000 as part of Newham’s annual music festival Under the Stars.
With One Accord: a part improvised, part devised work for 30 accordions, Youth Orchestra, and chamber ensemble drawn from the BBC Symphony Orchestra. Based on the music of Sofia Gudbaidulina.
Amazon Riffs: a performance project in collaboration with anglo-brazilian group, the Britton-Cavallo Ensemble. Based on traditional Brazilian dances, Maracatu and Hasciada. The project brought together 90 KS2 wider opportunities string players and 40 other young musicians drawn from Greenwich Music Service.
